state report [check]

This 5th grader of mine is finally finding her stride.
She is confidant.
She is now completing her work in class.
She is happy to go to school each day.
She is even finding time to practice...really efficient practice!

Earlier this year we were in a bit of turmoil.
She was bringing home reports of 7-12 missing assignments a week.
That would be concerning if she wasn't working at home...BUT it was TROUBLING because she WAS working at home---a lot.  Like 2 to 3 1/2 hours a night.
It is one thing to work that hard if it is getting you somewhere---but when you are working THAT hard and feel like your sinking it is not a good scenario for a 10 year old.  Her desk, and school cubicle was a disaster...disorganization is an understatement!  There was no time to be a kid...and she was STRESSED OUT!

Through email, phone calls with patient teachers, a parent teacher conference and a helpful principal big changes have been made.  It was arranged that whatever Kate finished in class is what she turned in...no unfinished work would be sent home.  She would complete 30 minutes of homework a night + 30 minutes of reading, unless she had a special project (i.e.; State Report, book report, etc...).  Through those earlier communications with the faculty at school, her teachers especially, she realized that although she had previously read them as callous and indifferent, she now knows that they care about her and want her to succeed.

There is a fine line between being your child's advocate and being an enabler.  I was worried that had a completely pulled Kate out of the situation...she would have lost the opportunity to solve the problem, communicate and struggle through.  As we pulled up to the school today and she handed me her reading minutes to sign, I realized that this 10 year old is getting it all figured out.

back to school feast 2014

OUR ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL FEAST

This school year is a big one for a few reasons.  All three of the girls were starting new schools-
Ellie is entering Jr High, Kate and Sophie were transferring back to our neighborhood school.

Our theme for this school year is:
"believe in the light, that ye may be children of light"
John 12:35

Danny and I set the table with candles...star sweatshirts (found them here)...and a special book for each of them with their own letter inside.

Ellie:  These Is My Words by Nancy Turner
Kate:  The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
Sophie: The Bear on Hemlock Mountain by Alice Dalgliesh

back to school bash

We had our 2nd annual BACK TO SCHOOL FEAST!
We enjoyed homemade pizza and homemade donuts...
they also did a white-elephant BACK TO SCHOOL gift exchange.

Before we had all of that fun we got down to business with our traditional CAFETERIA FEAR FACTOR.
See last year's HERE.

Last year I purchased most of it...this year each family brought a few items...and I was SHOCKED to see two or three families brought PIGS FEET!  I saw those last year...and thought NAH...TOO MEAN.  Well apparently, Danny and two other people thought it was just what this party ordered!  EEK.

On the menu:
bloody bandaids (graham cracker with frosting)
fruit cocktail (Sophie almost went down on this...the grape about did her in!)
bologna and mashed potato surprise (lost Ellie on that one)
mashed bananas
green olives
cold refried beans
bloody Mary mix
pepperoni bites (lost Kate here I think...)
canned goats milk
black eyed peas
vienna sausages
siracha sauce
some canned Korean meat???
canned oysters
canned mussels
pigs feet (gasp!)
and last but not least...
BYU mints

Two fearless participants made it to the VERY END...pigs feet...and BYU mints!
CONGRATULATIONS CAMERON AND JAKE!

Thanks for hosting Ngatuvai family!
A fantastic start to an ADVENTUROUS SCHOOL YEAR!

 TWO VIDEOS I SHOT...
I WISH I HAD MORE!

Kate lying through her teeth about swallowing "black eyed peas"... she tossed them under her chair...
"Dad what does this taste like?" with pepperoni in hand.  These girls of mine are lightweights!

We have had straight goats milk both years...and participants have said both times that it was the worst tasting item on the menu-
the Lowe boys took it like CHAMPS!

finished 6th grade

She completed 6th grade yesterday.
It was a day filled with emotions-
writing messages in year books
tears as the school bell rang
having the whole grade over for a pool party
having close friends over for games, dinner and a movie outside

It is hard to believe that elementary school is over for this special girl of ours.

back to school bash

Cousins, aunts+uncles, and grandparents gathered to celebrate going back to school!  Inspired by this family---we decided to have a "cafeteria fear factor."  Although I can't imagine any of these items being served in a school cafeteria, my girls and I roamed the grocery store filling our cart with what we imagined the most difficult things to swallow---

dragon fruit and spiny melon
chicken+waffles potato chips
seaweed biscuits
shrimp chips
goats milk (unflavored)
pork rinds
chicken, rice + vegetable baby food
tofurkey
marinated mushrooms
green olives
smoked oysters
pickled okra
marinated spicy bean curd
marinated cactus
creamed corn
sardines (in water +louisanna hot sauce)

Grandma Sally, Cameron, Dede and Randy!!!!

 THE WINNERS!!!!!!!!!
(looks like it will be just kids next year!)

a back to school white elephant gift exchange!
loved this!

LOVE all of these kids even more!!!!!!!
I hope they have a FABULOUS school year!!!
