lights poured out the windows

Danny and I jumped in the car one evening this past week.  We were welcoming home a friend who had been away on a mission.  We knew we wouldn't be long.  Dinner was almost ready.  Each of the girls had an instruction...one was practicing music...another finishing dinner and another setting the table.  Nothing is perfect around our house but as we pulled out of the driveway, the sun was down and the lights from our home poured out of the windows.  Our daughters were inside- being crazy, silly, distracted but also really really really good.  Their goodness fills our home.  We both reflected on what it would have been like had we not had the privilege of being their parents.  They truly bring us so much joy.  Life isn't easy...and far from perfect.  We have challenges and trials...hard days but really really good days too.  We are grateful that we get to grow, work, try, fail, and triumph together.

A couple of Saturdays ago...the weather was GORGEOUS and fall was in the air.  I had a new lens to play with (the 50mm 1.2) and about 1 hour to spare (before we had to leave for the football game).  I asked the girls if I could take their pictures- we put outfits together in about 10 minutes.  As we were about to leave Danny was finishing up a day of working in the yard.  We grabbed a shirt for him and decided to all go to a hillside in our neighborhood.  This photo shoot was the most PAINLESS attempt at family photos- completely unplanned, I didn't even change, I didn't buy one article of clothing- and I don't think Danny had even showered.   As we got there we realized that my mother in law had just come for the game---so she even took some of all five of us.  They were the least planned and organized photos we have taken-but may be my very favorites.

become as a little child...

How readily they trust...
how freely they love...
how generously they forgive...
how effortlessly they seek joy...

What a privilege it is to love a child...

I am reminded so often Jesus' invitation-
BECOME AS LITTLE CHILDREN

fallen leaves

sun warming our faces
fragrance of fallen leaves
my girls turning a chore into a game...

i am so glad i hesitated my first response
("NO", "we're in a hurry", "just get it done")
and replaced it with "YES!"
Ellie created that whole pile with her rake!
when they were ready for jumping they even grabbed my camera!
i am so much better off when i stop and listen to them.

Thanksgiving

I know this sounds like an exaggeration...but we haven't had Thanksgiving dinner at my parent's house on Thanksgiving day for at least 15 years.  We broke that bad tradition and headed to Mom and Dad's on Thursday!  The weather was reasonably warm.  The kids were excited...other than the dread my girl's were feeling at the thought of eating turkey.  (wimps...heeeheee)  I love my mom's cornbread dressing!  I love my dad's overall enthusiasm for the Thanksgiving feast.  My girls arranged a huge vegetable platter to look like a turkey.  They were pretty pleased and I was grateful for the help.  After our meal we headed to the movie theater to see Hugo.  Have you seen it!?!?!?!  Wasn't it BEAUTIFUL!!!!!  Isn't the story sweet!?!?  We LOVED it!!!!!

We are grateful for our warm homes, plentiful food, a land of liberty, falling leaves, and most of all~ each other.  xo

B conscious of your treasures.

Last Friday morning Danny and I woke to footsteps coming toward our room.  It was Sophie.  As she climbed into our bed she told us that it was too dark in her room and she wanted company.  It was 5:00 a.m. so we cuddled up with her between us and tried to get a bit more sleep.  Very quickly I could hear her breathing slow and I knew she was in dreamland.  I closed my eyes and was just at the brink of sleep when I heard her call out, "Yes Mom."  She spoke/yelled as if she was down the hall from me in such a cheerful tone it brought a smile to my face.  Danny glanced over to me and mouthed the words "so cute" and we tried again to fall asleep.  I lay there with my thoughts.  The sound of her cheerful voice yelling "yes mom" left me thinking.  My three girls, they really do listen.  The trust that they give me to lead and to guide them is great.  They are following me.  They follow those things that I intentionally teach them.  But I am afraid, what is even more influential is my example.  They watch my actions and soak in all they see (the good yes...but also the bad).  I lay there wanting to be the mother that they deserve.  Some of the first words I read that morning were these:

"Have a grateful heart~ be conscious of your treasures"

Yes.  Being conscious of the treasures that are found in family,
that certainly is a step in the right direction.

Thank you Sharon and Jason for helping take these pictures and sharing your swing xoxo.

the best friends in the world...

I have the best friends in the world.
I am not sure what I have ever done to deserve it.
This month I had friends....
  • who stopped everything they were doing to help me
  • who picked up the capes that I was making for a party to put letters on them
  • friends who need to visit (from out of state) so we can go to Chipotle and Zinn Bistro :)
  • who called, knowing I had a busy day, to see if Sophie could play
  • who made GORGEOUS accessories for our outfits for pictures
  • who made me laugh as we sat at dinner to celebrate a new baby for a friend
  • who takes my pictures every fall for my holiday ornaments/cards
  • who, at a moments notice, made time to take my pictures because of the storm wrecking my plans
  • who know me and just listen
  • who are coming from out of state for Thanksgiving!!!!!!!
  • who call me when they need something, or are having a bad day...
  • or just need to talk and cry.

I am SO grateful for these friends...
I count them among my greatest treasures.

Oh...how I treasure us.
Thank you Shauna for the pictures...I LOVE THEM!
Thank you for thinking of this chair.
It was perfect!
You were a lifesaver today!!!!!

as the weather changes

This fall has been absolutely wonderful!!!!!!!
We are in the second week of November and we are now feeling a chill.
It has been so warm before this week.

To make the snow and cold weather more enjoyable we have done a few things that make it more fun:

  • sweater shopping!!!!!!!!!!
  • beef stroganoff at Zinn Bistro (oh my word...I can't even describe it!!!!!!!!)
  • homemade tomato soup with grilled cheese on sourdough
  • throw a few snow balls (that would be Sophie throwing them at me)
  • reading new books on the couch
  • practice Christmas music on the piano
  • pot of beans with corn bread

We will miss the summer (we may or may not have driven out of our way to pass the pool today)----
but will do what we can to appreciate the colder weather.

It was GORGEOUS weather...
after a long, busy weekend...
a perfect day for a walk!

What beautiful views...
and so close to home.
We need to do this more often!
